![]() ![]() Long tones over the break and then over the second break. That said, here are my two favorite exercises for smoothing out the Altissimo register: 1. It would probably sound better at the audition to play 2 octaves well if you're on the fence. Middle finger of left hand with one and two of the right hand is the easier one, but first finger instead on the left hand often sounds better. Note there are multiple fingerings for high g. If it's fingerings in the third octave that are the difficulty, that just takes slow practice. Don't bite down to make it higher, it's all air speed and direction, raising your tongue. Practicing sirens also helps - with just the mouthpiece and barrel, see how high and how low you can get the pitch to go. You can then lift your first finger to get high d. You can sort of do it yourself if you make sure you don't react to your own thumb hitting the key. You should get a high g without changing anything. A good exercise is to play a low c and have someone pop the register key. In terms of tone, the key is to get the high notes the same way as the low notes - no extra biting or tension. But definitely important to work on it for eventually. If in doubt, probably better to skip the third octave in an audition.
